In early 2024, a finance employee at Arup — a global engineering firm with 18,500 staff — joined a routine video conference. The company’s Chief Financial Officer appeared on screen, asked for a series of wire transfers, and the employee complied. Fifteen transactions. Five bank accounts. HK$200 million — roughly $25 million — gone.
The CFO was never on that call. Neither was anyone else. Every person visible on the screen was a deepfake — an AI-generated replica built from publicly available footage, stitched together in real time, and projected into a live video conference convincing enough to override the instincts of a trained financial professional.
The employee later told investigators that something felt “a little off.” But when every other face on the call nodded in agreement, that hesitation dissolved.
This was not an isolated event. It was a preview of what 2026 looks like.
The Money Is Real. The People Are Not.
Deepfake-enabled fraud is no longer a theoretical risk sitting in a cybersecurity report that nobody reads. It is an operational problem measured in billions.
In the United States alone, deepfake-related fraud and scam losses reached $1.1 billion in 2025, tripling from $360 million the year before, according to data compiled by Keepnet Labs. During the first half of 2025, deepfake-related fraud losses in the financial sector exceeded $410 million globally, with some individual incidents exceeding $680,000.
The trajectory is accelerating. Deloitte estimates that generative AI-enabled fraud across the financial sector will reach approximately $40 billion annually by 2027. The FTC reported that American consumers lost more than $12.5 billion to fraud in 2025 — a 25% increase even as the number of fraud reports held steady at 2.3 million, meaning the scams are getting more effective, not more frequent.

Three Seconds of Audio Is All They Need

Video deepfakes have followed the same cost curve. The robocall that disrupted the 2024 New Hampshire primary — using a synthetic clone of President Biden’s voice — cost $1 to produce and took less than 20 minutes to create.
Real-time face-swapping during live video calls is now possible with consumer hardware. In April 2025, Hong Kong police intercepted a fraud network that was using AI to merge scammer faces onto photographs from lost identification documents. The operation had accumulated losses exceeding $193 million before it was shut down.
Your Bank’s Security Was Not Built for This
Financial institutions have spent decades building identity verification systems around a basic assumption: that the person presenting credentials is physically real. Biometric login. Voice recognition. Video KYC during account onboarding. All of these systems now share a common vulnerability — they were designed to catch humans pretending to be other humans, not machines generating synthetic humans from scratch.
Proofpoint reported that 99% of customer organizations it monitored in 2024 were targeted for account takeover attempts. Of those, 62% experienced at least one successful takeover. Real estate transactions — which involve large wire transfers, multiple parties communicating remotely, and tight closing timelines — have become prime targets. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported that cyber-enabled fraud accounted for $13.7 billion in losses in 2024, and the 2026 Identity Fraud Report documented a 40% year-over-year increase in deepfake-related incidents in property transactions.

The Family Emergency That Never Happened
Corporate targets get the headlines, but ordinary people are getting hit just as hard through a modernized version of the “grandparent scam.”
The attack is simple. A phone rings. On the other end is a voice — panicked, crying — that sounds exactly like a family member. There has been an accident. They need bail money. A hospital bill. A ransom. The voice begs the target not to call anyone else.
The voice is synthetic. The emergency is fabricated. The emotional response it triggers is real.
McAfee survey data shows that 77% of people targeted by AI voice clone scams lost money. Among those who lost money, 36% reported losses between $500 and $3,000. Older Americans — who are disproportionately targeted — reported $3.4 billion in total fraud losses in 2023 alone, an 11% increase from the previous year.
Roger Grimes, a cybersecurity researcher at KnowBe4, told Tampa Bay 28 in January 2026 that by the end of this year, deepfake technology would power the majority of consumer scams.

The uncomfortable truth about deepfake fraud in 2026 is that no single technology stops it. Human detection rates for high-quality video deepfakes sit at just 24.5%, according to compiled research. What works, based on current evidence, is procedural rather than technological.
For businesses: The Arup attack succeeded because a single employee had the authority to execute $25 million in transfers based on a video call. Multi-party authorization for large transactions — where a second person must independently verify through a different communication channel — would have stopped it. The call-back verification method is blunt, old-fashioned, and effective: before executing any high-value transfer, call the requesting party back at a phone number already on file, not one provided in the request.
For individuals: Any unexpected call demanding urgent financial action — regardless of who the caller sounds or looks like — should trigger a verification pause. Hang up. Call the person back at their known number. Establish a family code word that would be used only in genuine emergencies. This advice sounds obvious, but the entire design of deepfake scams is built to suppress exactly this kind of rational response.
For banks and financial institutions: The era of single-factor biometric authentication is ending. Voice recognition alone is no longer sufficient. Financial institutions are moving toward continuous behavioral authentication — monitoring typing patterns, device fingerprints, session behavior, and transaction patterns in real time rather than relying on a single identity check at login. PwC’s 2026 fraud analysis argues this shift from point-in-time verification to continuous monitoring is no longer optional.
The Problem That Gets Worse Before It Gets Better
Deepfake technology improves on a curve that outpaces the development of detection tools. The AI models used to generate synthetic faces and voices are getting cheaper, more accessible, and harder to distinguish from reality. The tools that detect them are getting better too — but consistently lag behind.
North Korean operatives have already used deepfake technology to pose as IT workers, pass remote job interviews, get hired at American companies, and funnel salaries back to the regime. The FBI and Department of Justice issued multiple warnings about this threat throughout 2025. Experian predicts employment fraud through deepfake candidates will escalate in 2026 as AI tools improve.
Financial regulators are moving — the EU AI Act and DORA framework both address AI-driven fraud — but legislation by definition operates on a slower timeline than the technology it attempts to regulate. In the interim, the defense falls disproportionately on individuals and organizations rather than systemic safeguards.
The financial system was built on a fundamental assumption: that identity can be verified. Deepfakes do not just enable individual scams. They erode the infrastructure of trust that makes financial transactions possible in the first place.
When a face on a screen can be fabricated in real time, and a voice on a phone can be cloned from a three-second clip, the question is no longer whether deepfake fraud will get worse. The question is how quickly institutions and individuals can adapt to a world where seeing and hearing are no longer believing.
